Account creation & information

An EOS account is a unique readable name that is stored in the blockchain and is connected to your keys. An EOS account is required to perform any actions on the EOS network.

Creating an EOS account has a small fee (approximately 1 EOS). There are two ways to create a new account, either you use an account provider and pay a fee for them to make the account for you, or you use an existing EOS account (can also be your exchange account) to make a new EOS account.

Account creation by Payment
(requires a small payment of approximately 5$ USD).

After you have created an account you may import the keys to the account into your wallet of choice.

Account creation by Staking
(requires secondary account with at least 1 EOS, installing a wallet, generating new keys, attaching the keypair to the account, and finally importing the keys to your wallet of choice).

1. Wallets

  • Anchor (MacOS, Windows, Linux, iOS) - Recommended*

  • Scatter (Desktop, no longer updated)

  • TokenPocket (MacOS, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS)

  • Wombat (Chrome plugin, Android, iOS)

2. Key generation

Because EOS uses a permission based system, it is always recommended to generate 2 different key pairs, one will act as your owner key and the other will be your active key.

Owner keys are the highest permission keys for your account. They allow you to modify any other keys you have and grant total control over the account. It is recommended to store your owner key offline, and only use it as a recovery key should your active key ever be compromised.

Active keys are a secondary permission key for your account, which serve for your day to day activities and can be configured to allow for further restrictions. Active keys do not have permission to change the owner key but can change any other key including itself.

To generate your keypair you have several options:

  • Use Anchor wallet to generate new keys. (easiest option, tools > manage keys > generate key pairs)

  • EosKey (Offline generation)

  • Cleos (Advanced option, requires installing EOS binaries)

Or use any of the following portals:

Once you have generated your keypairs, don’t forget to save them!

3. Attaching keys to a new account

  • Use Anchor wallet to create new account. (easiest option, tools > create account > paste your public keys and set the amount of EOS you wish to delegate to the new account)

Or use any of the following web portals to import your keys and delegate EOS to your new account.

After you have attached the keys to your account, you can now look up your account name in any of the block explorers to see if it has been created.

4. Importing your keys to your wallet

If your account was succesfully created, you can use the following guide to import your keys to the recommended Anchor Wallet.

Feel free to have a look at the following guides for more details about other wallets and providers:

  • When is PowerUp?

NOW, it was activated on EOS Feb-23-2021.

PowerUp Transition Calculator by @Greymass

  • Who is PowerUp for?

Anyone can use PowerUp to rent resources for 24 hour periods at a time, BUT average users (most of us) will more ideally use Wallets and Resource Providers that simplify and package resources for their users. PowerUp’s target audience is developers and power users first.

  • How do I earn from PowerUp?

Hold REX tokens. REX tokens are an accounting artifact that keep track of how many EOS tokens you own in the resource pool. You can get REX tokens at any existing REX portal: Bloks, EOSAuthority, EOSX.

If you already have REX tokens, you will automatically be earning from network activity (PowerUp fees, REX fees, Name bid fees, RAM fees).

If you don’t have REX tokens, you can deposit your EOS into a REX portal and start earning.

  • Where do I PowerUp?

If you’re sure you want to pay to rent resources, there are already a couple of early portals available at Bloksand EOS Authority.

Or have a look at this list of resource providers:
EOS Resource Providers - where to get CPU/NET/RAM

  • What about feeless transactions?

Once PowerUp is fully transitioned, you will no longer be able to stake your EOS for feeless transactions; however, you will be able to continue using wallets that cover a handful of free transactions for you each day.

You can also powerup for free every 12 hours using the community Power-up

If you own REX tokens, thereby participating on the earning side of the PowerUp Resource Model, you will now get a return on all network activity on EOS, not just some as with the previous resource model.

That return can be used to subsidize or in some cases cover the cost of renting what you may need - in a sense maintaining feeless transactions for yourself if you do not wish to use a wallet or provider that does this for you.

If you are a developer or power user that needs a lot of resources, you may need to use a Resource Provider or rent directly from PowerUp what you need.

  • What happens to the Resource Exchange?

For now, it will remain in place as the way for users to acquire REX tokens, but the rental of resources through this old model is now being phased out. PowerUp will control 99% of resources around April 8th, 2021.

  • What is the point of staking now?

Staking still serves an important role for account security when you separate your Owner and Active keys as well as staked tokens being a prerequisite to voting for block producers.

  • What about proxy voting and proxy rewards?

Nothing changes for voting or proxy rewards. Just as before PowerUp, you can still select a proxy when acquring REX tokens.

It is clearly missing eosio.stackexchange.com as a help page

and (even if many will not like it) ColinTalksCrypto’s Youtube Channel

This should be pinned.

Pinned.

Also, a good section to add in here might be places you can create an account, and which devices type they use. Anchor on iOS, Wombat on iOS/Android, the notes about costs, etc. It could also include the various websites out there that you pay and give them keys, and they create you an account.

Reformatted the post and added an account creation section including links to account providers.
I will include more providers as I come across them, if anyone knows of any that I’ve missed, feel free to share.

Recommend add the following:

Prospectors
Upland

and also, is there any way to link to dappradar for games on EOS and such? Here’s the link:

Added a games section, let me know your thoughts, could expand the list further if it helps visualize the products better.

thanks, looks great. someone on twitter was suggesting nothing was running on EOS. I pointed him to your list and also dappradar.

I’ll keep referencing ur list for this likely common question coming out of various medias.
